United Nations - International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (June 26, 2016)

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, France reaffirms its determination to combat this inhumane and unacceptable practice.

Torture remains a reality.

Thousands of political opponents, human rights activists, journalists, humanitarian workers, people who have been stigmatized due to their sexual orientation or have been detained for ordinary crimes continue to suffer as result of crackdowns by regimes, as in Syria, or to be subjected to abuse by terrorist groups.

France calls for the compliance, in all circumstances, with the absolute prohibition of torture. It calls on the states that have not yet done so to join the Convention against Torture as well as its optional protocol. No threat can justify the use of torture or the renunciation of the principles of humanity and the dignity of the human person.

We remain committed to combating impunity and standing up for the victims.
