Report on the decrease in global maternal mortality rates
France welcomes the reduction of global maternal mortality rates by nearly half (44%) since 1990. These encouraging results of a joint study by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank and the United Nations Population Division were published in the November 12 edition of The Lancet.
The fight against maternal and infant mortality is one of France’s public health priorities. It is also one of the Millennium Development Goals. Since 2011, France has supported maternal and infant health, committing nearly 500 million euros for the 2011-2015 period through the French Muskoka Fund.
This commitment has had remarkable results, notably in the countries of French-speaking Africa and countries in crisis, and is continuing as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.
